BunionetteA Bunionette is similar to a Bunion, but it develops on the outside of the foot.  It is oftentimes referred to as a Tailor’s Bunion.  Bunionettes are caused by an overgrowth or swelling of the soft tissue covering the joint, or a congenital defect, or even the actual bowing of the 5th metatarsal bone.

What are the symptoms of a bunionette?

The symptoms of a bunionette include redness, swelling, and pain at the site of the enlargement. These symptoms occur when wearing shoes that rub against the enlargement, irritating the soft tissues underneath the skin and producing irritation and inflammation.  Some people find the bump unsightly.

What causes a bunionette?

Often a bunionette is caused by an inherited faulty mechanical structure of the foot.  In these cases, changes occur in the foot’s boney framework, resulting in the development of an enlargement.  The fifth metatarsal bone starts to protrude outward, while the little toes moves inward.  This shift creates a “bump” on the outside of the foot and it becomes irritated whenever the shoe presses against it.

Sometimes a bunionette is actually a bony spur (an outgrowth of bone) on the side of the fifth metatarsal head.
